Sources of Power

Some Observations

  • Any combination of 2 or more can achieve significant individual influence or power
  • Power gained by the individual is quite unlikely to be automatically transferred to benefit the organisation
  • Position if not backed up by at least one other source of power leaves the incumbent very exposed to the power gained by others in a position of lesser authority and/or seniority
  • Knowledge is becoming an increasing source of power, particularly by people without a significant position and/or without a strong public personality
  • Mobility combined with personality will lead to power via knowledge. This can readily grow the network which enables senior positions to be readily achieved.

Sources of Power: Personality - Network - Knowledge - Mobility - Position
